Have you tried Japanese sweet potatoes before? If not, please do.
They have such a unique flavor and texture. If you're not a fan of regular sweet potatoes, you might find these Japanese sweet potatoes to be quite delicious. Or even if you do love regular sweet potatoes, Japanese sweet potatoes can become a refreshing change of pace.
Plus, baking Japanese Sweet Potatoes is simple and easy. I make them all the time!
Japanese sweet potatoes are not like regular sweet potatoes. Yes, both are potatoes and both are sweet, but that's about where their similarities stop.
'Regular' sweet potatoes are orange inside with brownish skin. They are very fibrous and slightly sweet. Their flavor is mellow and neutral, good for combining with other flavors.
Japanese sweet potatoes, on the other hand, are light yellow inside and their skin is purple. These potatoes have an intense sweet flavor -- I've even seen a recipe for icing using Japanese sweet potatoes. They are not fibrous at all, instead their insides are gooey and creamy. In other words, they are amazing!
As a side note, I have nothing against regular sweet potatoes. Because of their bright orange insides, regular sweet potatoes likely have more antioxidants than Japanese. Regular sweet potatoes have their place, I often make this recipe with them.
I much prefer the Japanese sweet potatoes in this recipe. Because of their super sweet flavor, you don't need a sauce or dressing. They are so delicious eaten plain. But, you do you -- if you want to dip them in something, go for it! I suggest peanut butter.
Baking Japanese sweet potatoes is so easy! For these Roasted Japanese Sweet Potato Rounds , the only thing you need to pay attention to is how thick you cut your slices. For the perfect amount of browning (aka flavor!!) you need to cut slices less than a centimeter thick.
I like to vary my slices slightly. When not all the slices are exactly the same, you'll end up with some that are really brown and some that are only browned slightly. I don't measure my slices, but they vary between 1/4 cm and 3/4 cm.
Step 1. Preheat the oven to 425°F.
Step 2. Thinly slice the sweet potatoes (between 1/4 cm and 3/4 cm).
Step 3. Arrange on a baking sheet and bake for 40 minutes. Flip halfway through. Enjoy!
You can make more than just rounds with your Japanese sweet potato. These delicious potatoes are SO versatile!
To bake Japanese sweet potatoes whole, just bake as you would with a regular sweet potato. Poke some holes in the potato with a fork and then bake at 400°F until the potato is fork tender.
Spread a little vegan butter inside or sprinkle with cinnamon and you've got yourself a tasty treat!
Japanese sweet potatoes add a unique flavor to any dish. Use them any time you make a roasted vegetable or potato recipe. Some recipes they might taste good in are:
Yes, you read that right. Sweet potato brownies!
After you bake your Japanese sweet potato you can add it to brownies or blondies for a natural sweetener. I love using sweet potato in brownies because it creates a super fudgy texture.
Since Japanese sweet potatoes are a light white color, they are perfect for plant-based frosting. They don't add any funky color to the icing. They do, however, create a super thick buttercream-like frosting that is naturally sweet.
Check out these chocolate cupcakes or these maple pecan cupcakes for my frosting recipes using Japanese or white sweet potatoes.
God, thank you for naturally delicious food that is simple to make and easy to enjoy. You are so good. Amen.

If you have a convection oven, use the convection setting and reduce the roasting time to 30 minutes.
