Easy Chocolate Simple Syrup for Coffee

This Chocolate Simple Syrup is smooth, rich, and incredibly versatile. This homemade syrup can be adjusted into either a thin coffee syrup or a thicker dessert-style chocolate sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Water
  • 1 Cup White Sugar can also use agave, maple syrup, or coconut sugar *see notes
  • ⅔ - 1 Cup Cocoa Powder *see notes
  • 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract or Vanilla Bean Paste optional
  • Pinch Salt optional

Instructions

  • Heat the water and sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
  • Remove from heat. Add the vanilla and salt. Use a fine mesh strainer to sift in cocoa powder. Whisk well. Adjust the cocoa powder to your desired taste and thickness.
  • Let cool before using on ice cream or in iced drinks.

Notes

Sugar: classic simple syrups are made with water and sugar, but I love making syrups with less refined sugar! This recipe also works with agave or maple syrup. You can also use coconut sugar - with coconut sugar you will get a more chocolate + caramel flavor.
Cocoa Powder: you can adjust the amount of cocoa powder you use based on how you prefer your syrup. For a thinner, sweeter syrup, use ⅔ cup of cocoa powder. This creates a traditional simple syrup texture. For a thicker, richer syrup, use up to 1 cup. This creates an ice cream syrup texture.
