Barbecue Jackfruit Sandwiches are the plant-based equivalent of pulled pork. Jackfruit mimics pork and is covered in a smoky, sweet barbecue sauce.

Have you ever cooked with jackfruit before?

Honestly, I'm convinced that this fruit is one of the most versatile foods in a plant-based kitchen. You can use jackfruit to sub for meat, make it the star of a dish, or even use the ripe fruit for sweet recipes.

    Barbecue Jackfruit Sandwiches

    What is Jackfruit?

If you've never heard of it before, jackfruit is, as the name suggests, a fruit. It's in the same family as figs and mulberries.

A whole jackfruit is actually pretty huge. It has a hard outer shell that takes a very sturdy knife to cut open. Don't worry though, you can buy it in a can, which makes cooking with it so much easier.

When ripe, jackfruit is super sweet. Dried ripe jackfruit and it tastes like candy!

When unripe, jackfruit is very mild in flavor. It will take on the flavor of the spices and sauces you use to flavor it.

Another cool thing about jackfruit is the texture. It is pretty tough so it mimics the texture of meat very easily. For example, I used it as a chicken substitute in my Jackfruit Lemon Quinoa Soup recipe.

We're going to do the same thing with these Barbecue Jackfruit Sandwiches. It's basically like plant-based pulled pork. When you cut the jackfruit into small pieces, it breaks apart just like shredded pork.

Besides jackfruit, there isn't too much else that goes into this recipe. We'll whip up a quick BBQ Sauce to coat the jackfruit and I suggest serving the jackfruit on a plant-based bun, with cabbage.

    Ingredient Notes

    • Young Green Jackfruit: you can find jackfruit canned. Be sure to buy the jackfruit in brine, not in syrup.
    • Plant-Based BBQ Sauce: I recommend my homemade plant-based BBQ sauce, but you can use a store-bought sauce if you want.
    • Red Cabbage: you could also use green cabbage or coleslaw. Or just omit the cabbage entirely.
