Coffee Nice Cream is creamy and thick with a rich coffee flavor. With a banana base, this mocha nice cream is a healthy alternative to dairy ice cream.

I love anything that has to do with coffee. Coffee has such a lovely, rich flavor.

For this coffee nice cream, I actually added a bit of cocoa powder. Because cocoa powder just makes the coffee flavor more rich and decadent. Plus, it gives you a good excuse to add some chocolate chips.

    What is nice cream?

Nice cream is a plant-based version of ice cream made from bananas.

Bananas are amazing foods. They are sweet but filled with nutrients and fiber so they don't spike your blood sugar like 'traditional' sugar would.

When you freeze bananas and blend them up, you get a super thick and creamy texture that's just like ice cream. But it's nice. So nice cream.

This coffee nice cream is the espresso-flavored version of traditional nice cream.

Why I love Coffee Nice Cream

    • Dietary needs - this recipe is plant-based, oil-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, and refined sugar-free
    • No-churn - No need for an ice cream maker. A blender or food processor is all you need for this recipe
    • Fruit sweetened - bananas are naturally so sweet. There's no need to add any sugar!
    • Coffee flavor - the warm, earthy, chocolatey notes of coffee are fully present in this ice cream. Plus a little cocoa powder to help with the richness

    Ingredient Notes

    • Frozen Bananas: Make sure you use ripe bananas for optimum sweetness. I like to slice or break my bananas into small chunks and place them in a plastic bag before freezing them. I find they blend better this way.
    • Espresso Powder: espresso powder is how we get that rich coffee flavor without adding any liquid. (Adding liquid makes an ice-like ice cream, not a creamy ice cream). You could use instant coffee as a substitute
    • Cocoa Powder: I used some cocoa powder to help enhance the coffee flavor. Make sure to choose an unsweetened cocoa powder to avoid added sugar.
    • Chocolate Chips: If you're looking for some extra chocolatey flavor and a bit of crunch, throw in a few vegan chocolate chips. Yum!

How to make Coffee Nice Cream

Step 1. Blend the bananas, espresso powder, and cocoa powder in a blender or powerful food processor.

Step 2. Scoop into a bowl immediately for soft-serve or refreeze for a thicker nice cream. Top with chocolate chips. Enjoy!

    Serving Suggestions

If you're looking for soft-serve consistency: this is the nice cream for you. To make it easier to blend, we'll let the bananas sit at room temperature for a few minutes before blending. The result is a soft, silky texture that scoops easily.

If you're more of a traditional, churned consistency: all you need to do is put the nice cream in the freezer until it freezes solid. Then you can scoop it using an ice cream scoop.

Or you can do both! Make a big batch, have some for dessert, and then freeze the rest for later. Coffee Nice Cream for dessert every night!!
