High protein tacos made from seitan make taco night better than ever! These easy seitan tacos are ready in about 30 minutes!

Three seitan tacos on a plate.

Taco night is indeed a regular meal rotation in my house (not always on Tuesday, but somehow more often on Tuesday than you'd think is probable!)

I've got plenty of taco recipes, so whatever flavor/texture combo I'm feeling that week can easily become a reality. My typical go-to recipe is my tempeh tacos but lentil tacos are always a hit and tofu tacos are a great way to use up extra tofu.

These seitan tacos are highest on my list for "high protein tacos" - seitan is packed with plant protein and is my go-to protein source these days. These tacos feature my ground beef crumbles. They are so easy to make and the seitan does NOT need to be boiled (thank goodness because who has time for that?!)

Why I love this Seitan Taco Meat

    • Dietary needs - this taco meat is plant-based, dairy-free, oil-free, and refined sugar-free.
    • Easy weeknight dinner - this taco meat is ready in about 30 minutes and only has a few simple ingredients. It's never been easier to whip up a vegan taco!
    • ‍Packed with protein - seitan has SO much protein.
    • And fiber too - I almost always add black beans to my taco meat - beans are such a great source of fiber
    • Great taco texture - these tacos are NOT mushy! The beef crumbles have a solid texture, since they are baked in the oven.
    • Tastes like real tacos - my seitan beef easily absorbs other flavors, so it really takes on the taco seasoning flavor. Plus, it has a texture similar to ground beef

    Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

    • Vegan Ground Beef Crumbles: my seitan ground beef recipe takes about 25 minutes from start to finish. Start by making this recipe and then come back here to finish off the tacos.
    • Onion: I used a yellow onion, but a white or red onion would both be great
    • Black Beans: feel free to use kidney or pinto beans instead
    • Garlic
    • Taco Seasoning: I use my homemade Taco Seasoning - it takes two minutes to make if you don't already have some
    • To Serve: Tortillas or Taco Shells, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion
    Seitan taco ingredients.

    Step By Step Instructions

Step 1. In a non-stick pan over medium heat, cook the onion until just starting to soften.

Seitan tacos step 1 - cook the onion.

Step 2. Add the beef, black beans, garlic, and taco seasoning to the pan. Cook for 2-4 minutes until the seitan and beans are warmed through.

Seitan tacos step 2 - add the beef.

Step 3. Serve with your favorite taco fixings. Enjoy!

Seitan tacos step 3 - serve taco style.

    FAQ & Expert Tips

    What is seitan?

Seitan is a meat substitute made from vital wheat gluten. Various seitan recipes can be made from vital wheat gluten by varying the spices and cooking method.

Vital wheat gluten basically a flour like substance that is primarily protein. This is what makes the beef so high in protein!

    Are these tacos gluten-free?

Seitan is made from vital wheat gluten, which is basically pure gluten. So no, these tacos are not gluten free.

I have MANY gluten-free taco recipes on my site. Try my tempeh tacos, tofu tacos, walnut taco meat, lentil tacos (and more!)

    Storage

Store these tacos in an air tight container in the fridge for up to 5 days
