Enjoy a Healthy Apple Cider Spritzer this fall. Made with only a few simple ingredients, this drink is light and refreshing.

Three apple cider spritzers, garnished with apple slices and cinnamon sticks.

Well this recipe is a first for my blog! I've never published an alcoholic beverage before... probably for several reasons.

    1. I've only been of legal drinking age for a short time.
    2. I don't actually drink that much -- as you might guess, drinking a lot is not that good for your health.
    3. When I do drink, I tend to keep things simple. I drink hard kombucha or a glass of whiskey.
    4. Most cocktails aren't healthy. They're filled with sugar (disguised as simple syrup) and tons of alcohol.

So I'm calling this a "Healthy" Apple Cider Spritzer, but don't think that this is something you should have every day. This drink is healthy relative to cocktails that have several tablespoons of sugar and three types of alcohol.

    Healthy Apple Cider Spritzer

    A word on alcohol

This is my lovely reminder that if you drink, drinking in moderation is best.

As Catholics we are called to practice sobriety.

This means NOT drinking if we aren't 21 yet. And once we are 21, not drinking in excess.

    What is excess?

This is hard. It can be different for everyone. But in general, this means not drinking to the point of drunkenness. We always want to be in control of our bodies and our minds, to make good decisions.

Sobriety also involves not drinking alcohol to numb pain.

I find that many people turn to alcohol when they are sad, hurting, or stressed.

It's okay to feel these things, but it's not okay to just forget about them by overdoing it with alcohol.

When we have intense emotions like these, God wants us to turn to Him. He wants us to cast our cares on him (1 Peter 5:7). This means prayer! If you're not praying daily, now's the perfect time to start! Try just a few minutes and work your way up to at least 15 minutes each day (preferably more).

It's also okay to take other action when you feel stressed, sad, or lonely. Call a friend, go for a walk, exercise, have a spa day. These things can get your mind in a better space, without using a substance to block your pain.

All that to say: alcohol shouldn't be used as a tool to numb pain. It CAN, however, be enjoyed!

    Healthy Apple Cider Spritzer

These Healthy Apple Cider Spritzers are a light drink that have that classic fall apple flavor.

I went all in with the apple flavor in this recipe! Because we're not using sugar, I wanted to make sure that we still get tons of flavor in this drink. Trust me, you won't feel like you're missing anything.

    Let's talk ingredients!

    Ingredient Notes

There are only a few ingredients in these spritzers. But that makes a great cocktail! They don't take a lot of time to make, which means more time spent enjoying.

    • Apple Brandy: The alcohol. Apple brandy is just brandy with an apple flavor. It's actually pretty sweet by itself, so this helps us build a sweet drink.
    • Apple Cider: Instead of simple syrup (or another sugar-sweetened concoction) we're using apple cider.
    • Club Soda: It wouldn't be spritzer without some bubbles! I used club soda, but apple-flavored seltzer water would be a great addition.
    • Gala Apple: It's so fun to fill your drink with some fresh fruit! I used Gala apples, but you can use your favorite type of apple.

How to make Healthy Apple Cider Spritzers

Making this cocktail is quite easy.

Step 1. Start by chopping your apple. If you're only making one drink, you won't use a full apple, but if you're making drinks for a couple people you can divide an apple among several drinks.

Step 2. Add the brandy, cider, and club soda to a glass. Stir to combine.

Step 3. Top with chopped apple. Enjoy!

    Recipe Prayer

Thank you God for apples. We are grateful for foods that help us enter into the season we are in. Amen.
