Smoked Maple Portobello Burgers take a regular mushroom burger up a notch! These burgers are a perfect plant-based summer BBQ dish.

Last week I shared a carrot dog recipe, so it's only fitting that this week we make mushroom burgers! These Smoked Maple Portobello Burgers will be a hit at your next summer cookout. Mushrooms are so tasty, with a great umami flavor. When you add a bit of smoky maple flavor you get a perfect balance of sweet and savory.
Mushrooms are a great meat alternative. They are tough, so you get a good bite. And they are so simple! No crazy ingredient lists like you might find in store-bought vegan burger patties. Throw on your favorite condiments and you've got yourself a tasty, healthy burger!!

Why I love these portobello burgers
- Dietary needs - these portobello burgers are completely plant-based, no meat in sight! They are also oil-free, sugar-free, and will be gluten-free as long as you use gluten-free burger buns.
- Quick and easy - These burgers are super easy to make. There are only two ingredients and you can make them in less than 20 minutes!
- Vegetarian BBQ option - these burgers are perfect to serve at a summer BBQ for those who don't want to eat meat.

Ingredients
- Portobello Mushrooms: Portobello mushrooms make the most perfect burgers because they are rather large, just the right size for a burger bun. They also have a more 'meaty' texture; they're tougher than other mushrooms, so you really get a good bite.
- Maple Syrup & Date Syrup: I used a combination of maple syrup and date syrup. The date syrup is thick and makes more of a paste, and the maple syrup adds that classic maple flavor. If you want, you can just use all of one.
- Liquid Smoke: this is what creates the smoky flavor. You can find liquid smoke at your grocery store, near the condiments.

How to make Smoked Maple Portobello Burgers
Step 1. Preheat the oven to 450° F. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
Step 2. Remove the stems from the portobello mushrooms. Place the mushrooms on the lined baking sheet.
Step 3. Spread 2 teaspoons of Smoked Maple Date Syrup on each mushroom. Bake for 5 minutes.

Step 4. Remove from the oven and use a spoon to spread some of the sauce back onto the mushrooms. If desired, drizzle more syrup onto each mushroom. Bake 5 minutes more.
Step 5. Remove the mushrooms from the oven and assemble burgers with your desired toppings. Enjoy!
