    Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

    • Chickpeas: you can use canned or dry chickpeas for this recipe, just make sure to reserve the liquid from the can if you use canned or cooking liquid if you use dried
    • Aquafaba: this is the reserved liquid, it's what we'll use in place of the oil
    • Tahini: tahini is a sesame seed paste. If you don't have any you could use sunflower seed butter or almond butter
    • Lemon Juice: fresh is best
    • Minced Garlic: mincing the garlic before you blend it keeps it from getting too strong
    • Spices: cumin and salt
    • Fresh Basil

    FAQ & Expert Tips

Can I use dried basil instead of fresh?

Not for this recipe. Fresh basil is best for flavor and color. Dried basil won't provide the same bright taste. If you can't get enough basil, you can sub up to half with fresh spinach.

How long does basil hummus last?

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

What can I serve with basil hummus?

Serve with fresh pita or pita chips, crackers, or fresh veggies. Or, use as a spread for sandwiches and wraps.
