Smoky Black Bean Dip is thick and spicy with a rich, delicious smokiness. It's the perfect whole-food plant-based dip for veggies or dressing for salads!

This dip is quickly becoming one of my favorite methods to fuel my carrot addiction. And the funny thing about it is that it came into existence randomly.

    Smoky Black Bean Dip

I was hanging out with a friend and knew I needed to eat some dinner. I had some Tempeh Stuffed Sweet Potatoes on hand, but I hadn't gotten the chance to take pictures for the blog post. So I couldn't eat any of it.

I needed food though, so I threw some black beans in the food processor and started making dip. I did something I often do when I'm not thinking - I dump the entire can of beans in my food processor, liquid and all.

What happens when you use the entire can of beans to make a dip is it comes out super runny. Normally, I would just open a second can of beans and add just the beans to thicken up the dip. But I didn't have another can of black beans.

So I needed something else to thicken up the dip. I could've added oats/oat flour or peanut powder. I figured peanut powder would give the dip a boost of protein, so I went for it.

Then I just threw some other random ingredients into the processor and crossed my fingers. It turned out pretty well! So well that I proceeded to eat the entire batch for dinner.

After a couple more iterations, I present to you Smoky Black Bean Dip!

Why I love Smoky Black Bean Dip

    • Dietary needs - this dip is dairy-free, plant-based, oil-free, gluten-free, and sugar-free
    • Quick and easy - it literally takes 5 minutes to whip up this black bean dip
    • Extra protein - peanut powder adds a boost of protein to the dip
    • Fiber - black beans are packed with fiber! And we can all benefit from some more fiber in our lives. This dip is a super easy and tasty way to get some extra fiber

    Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

    • Black Beans: any can of black beans will work. Ideally one without any added salt
    • Peanut Powder: this is a powder made from peanuts. If you don't have any you can either add more black beans or strain the beans before you blend them.
    • Peanut Butter: adding a bit of fat helps create a deeper flavor. (Just like you would add tahini to hummus)
    • Garlic: whole garlic is ideal, but if you don't have any you can use garlic powder instead
    • Lemon Juice: fresh is best!
    • Liquid Smoke: this is what creates the smoky flavor. Find liquid smoke near the condiments in the grocery store
    • Cumin
    • Salt
    • Cayenne: if you don't like spice, omit the cayenne

How to Make Smoky Black Bean Dip

One of my favorite things about dip is that it's super quick to whip up. All you need is 5 minutes and you have a tasty snack.

To make this dip, just add all the ingredients to the food processor and blend until the ingredients are completely combined and smooth.

    Serving Suggestions

Enjoy this dip with veggies. My favorite is carrots, but so many veggies would taste good in this dip.

You could also eat this on salads. It's thin enough that you can use it as a thick dressing. Delicious!

Or, ya know, just eat it out of a bowl with a spoon. I wouldn't know anything about that...

    Recipe Prayer

Jesus, thank you for recipes that develop randomly. And thank you for bowls out of which to eat these recipes. Amen.
