I feel like watermelon is the quintessential refreshing summer fruit and lemonade is the classic summer beverage, so it's only right to make a watermelon lemonade that's a delightful combo of both!

This watermelon lemonade is both sweet and tart, and incredibly refreshing. That cool, mellow watermelon juice really shines through. Making a drink that you can sip again and again.

With my agave simple syrup, instead of a regular simple syrup, this lemonade is totally refined sugar free!

Why You'll Love This Watermelon Lemonade

    • Vegan and refined sugar-free - Naturally sweetened with agave, or your sweetener of choice! Suggestions below.
    • Adjust your sweetness - want a tarter lemonade with less sugar? Use less syrup or add more lemon juice!
    • Perfect for summer - A fun twist on classic lemonade.
    • Easy to batch - Great for making ahead for BBQs, picnics & parties.
    • Easy to make - Just blend, strain & stir.
    • Great for Parties - Easy to scale for a crowd

    Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

    • Agave Simple Syrup: I used my agave simple syrup. This recipe would be great with brown sugar syrup, maple simple syrup, date syrup, or stevia. If you want something more fruity, try my strawberry simple syrup or raspberry simple syrup.
    • Watermelon: look for a seedless watermelon
    • Lemons: I highly recommend buying lemons and juicing them yourself. Fresh juice is brighter and significantly more flavorful than bottled.
    • Water
    • Ice
    • Garnish: mint, lemon slices, watermelon slices. Totally optional, but super fun, especially if serving for a party
    Watermelon Lemonade ingredients.

    Step-By-Step Instructions

Step 1. Make the agave simple syrup or your simple syrup of choice. (See post for syrup recommendations.) Set aside to cool while you prepare the other ingredients.

Watermelon Lemonade step 1 - make the simple syrup.

Step 2. Juice the lemons until you achieve slightly over 1 cup of lemon juice. Strain through a fine mesh strainer.

Watermelon Lemonade step 2 - juice and strain the lemon juice.

Step 3. Add the watermelon to a high speed blender and blend until smooth. Strain through a fine mesh strainer.

Watermelon Lemonade step 3 - blend and strain the watermelon juice.

Step 4. Add the watermelon juice, lemon juice, agave simple syrup, and water to a pitcher. Stir. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Watermelon Lemonade step 4 - mix all the juices together.

Step 5. Serve over ice with a garnish of lemon wedge, watermelon slice, and fresh mint.

Watermelon Lemonade step 5 - serve over ice.

Ways to customize this Watermelon Lemonade

    • Add sparkling water for bubbles - like my strawberry pink lemonade mocktail
    • Blend with frozen watermelon for a slushy version
    • Use lime juice for extra citrus flavor. I love a combo of lemon and lime
    • Turn it into a mocktail with ginger beer

    Elizabeth's Kitchen Notes

    • Serving a crowd: avoid adding ice to your pitcher when serving this lemonade at a party. This dilutes the lemonade. Instead, keep a bucket of ice nearby and allow guests to fill their own cups.
    • Shake or stir before drinking: I noticed that even after straining both the watermelon pulp and lemon juice, this lemonade still had the tendency to have sediment settle when it was stored in the fridge. If you're storing in the fridge for several days, it's a good idea to shake or stir before drinking

    FAQ & Expert Tips

Do I need to strain the watermelon?

Yes! I highly recommend straining both the lemon juice and watermelon. It creates a smooth drink that tastes just like store bought.

Can I make watermelon lemonade ahead of time?

Yes. This lemonade will last up to a week in the fridge. For peak freshness, use within a day or two.

How do I choose a ripe watermelon?

Look for a large yellow field spot and a watermelon that feels heavy for its size.

    Can I make this sparkling?

Oh yes! This makes a delightful mocktail version. Instead of adding the water, simply mix the juices and add sparkling water by the cup
