This Homemade Horchata Oat Milk Shaken Espresso is made with a delicious horchata syrup and creamy oat milk. An easy Starbucks copycat you can enjoy at home.

The horchata shaken espresso is my favorite option at Starbucks, but it's only offered as a seasonal flavor, so you can't get it all year. I decided to make my own homemade version, with a homemade horchata syrup and going all out with a cocktail shaker to create a real shaken espresso.
Horchata is typically by soaking rice overnight and blending, but since this is just a syrup, we can use a much faster method of cooking on the stovetop. For a syrup that tastes just like horchata that's ready in 20 minutes!
Once you've made a batch, grab some non-dairy milk and espresso, and make a horchata shaken espresso!

Ingredient Notes & Substitutsions
- Espresso: if you have an espresso machine brew a double shot for this latte. If not, I highly recommend espresso powder! The brand Medaglia D'Oro is my go-to. I've never found another brand I like. This espresso powder is smooth, bold, and not bitter. It's a great alternative to espresso. Alternatively, strong brewed coffee or instant coffee can also work.
- Horchata Syrup: my homemade vegan version of Starbucks' horchata syrup
- Non-Dairy Milk: I typically use either soy milk or Planet Oat's unsweetened extra creamy milk. Look for the creamiest milk you can find or anything labeled "barista"
- Ice: if making an iced version

Step-By-Step Instructions
Step 1. Prepare the horchata syrup.

Step 2. Brew or make your espresso.

Step 3. For the classic shaken espresso, add the espresso, syrup, and ½ cup of ice to a cocktail shaker. Shake well. Add fresh ice to a glass, then strain the espresso mixture over the ice. Pour on the milk. For a hot version, steam or heat your milk then add the brewed espresso, horchata syrup, then the milk.

FAQ & Expert Tips
Yes! If you don't have espresso (or espresso powder) you can substitute strong brewed coffee or even use instant coffee - use about 2 ounces of strong coffee.
Yes! I only recommend doing this if you're making an iced version. Scale up to however many drinks you'd like. And store in the fridge for up to two days.
Yes! Any milk will work. I recommend soy milk if you aren't using oat. Or any milk labeled "barista"
If you want to brew your own espresso and are looking for a quality, functional, yet inexpensive machine, I recommend the Breville Bambino. This does require that you own a separate grinder.
For an all-in-one machine, the Breville Barista Express is what you want
