These homemade sesame carrots are inspired by the carrot topping served at Bibibop. The carrots are lightly steamed, then finished with sesame oil for a flavorful side. An easy version of the restaurant fav!

Welcome to my homemade Bibibop series!

I'm recreating Bibibop favorites, inspired by ingredients that Bibibop actually uses. Easily made at home - for the flavors you love about Bibibop. Cheaper, meal-preppable, and restaurant-style at any time!

This is my homemade sesame carrots recipe! You julienne the carrots, then give them a quick steam to soften them slightly, then toss with sesame oil and fresh cilantro.

The result is a carrot side you will want to devour! With a delicious toasted sesame flavor. So good!

Why You'll Love These Homemade Sesame Carrots

    • Quick & Easy - the carrots get a light steam - only 2 minutes. So they're literally ready in minutes
    • Bold Sesame Flavor - A little sesame oil adds rich, nutty flavor that transforms the flavor of the carrots
    • Bibibop Inspired - the delicious Bibibop-style carrots, right at home!
    • Vegan & gluten free - Completely plant-based, and just like Bibibop, totally GF

    Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

    • Carrots: fresh, whole carrots are best. Avoid baby carrots or anything pre-packaged if you can - they have added preservatives that significantly alter the flavor
    • Sesame Oil: I love using toasted sesame oil. There isn't a great sub for an oil free version, but if you want a similar flavor I recommend adding sesame seeds instead
    • Cilantro: Bibibop uses cilantro, so that's what I'm doing here. But if you have parsley on hand, it can work as a sub

    Step-By-Step Instructions

Step 1. Peel and julienne the carrots. I love using a julienne tool!

    Serving Suggestions

These carrots are delicious in more than just Bibibop-style bowls!

    • Serve as an upgraded side dish, like with my hoisin tofu
    • Use as a slaw in a sloppy joe or on a fresh sandwich
    • Add them to poke bowls

    Elizabeth's Kitchen Notes

    • Steaming the carrots: you can totally make this dish without steaming the carrots, but in testing I was pleasantly surprised to find that steaming for just a minute or two turn the carrots into a totally different dish - they straddle the line fresh topping and a hot topping, in the best way
    • Sesame Oil: I LOVE using toasted sesame oil. It has way more flavor than regular sesame oil.

    FAQ & Expert Tips

    Can I use baby carrots?

I don't recommend using baby carrots because they have a different flavor than whole carrots, and they are much harder to julienne

    Storage

Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.
