Welcome to my homemade Bibibop series!
I'm recreating Bibibop favorites, inspired by ingredients that Bibibop actually uses. Easily made at home - for the flavors you love about Bibibop. Cheaper, meal-preppable, and restaurant-style at any time!
Before I learned the secrets of purple rice, I thought that it was just another type of rice grain. I'd heard of black rice, so I assumed there was also a purple grain.
Turns out, that's not the case.
Korean-style purple rice, like the kind you can get at Bibibop is actually a combination of black rice and white rice. When they're mixed, you get a gorgeous purple color!

What Is Purple Rice?
Purple rice is actually a combination of two rices: black rice and white rice. When they cook together they create a purple color!
Black rice is a tougher rice grain than white, but by using just a bit in your pot of white rice, you still get a nice fluffy pot of rice, but with a beautiful purple color.

Ingredient Notes & Substitutions
- White Rice: I just use regular long grain white rice - whatever white rice you have on hand will work for this
- Black Rice: you can usually find black rice in a smaller bag at the store - I buy at Whole Foods or you can find black rice on Amazon. A smaller container is okay, since this recipe only uses a few tablespoons.
- Water
- Salt
Step-By-Step Instructions
Step 1. Because black rice is a tougher grain than white rice it takes longer to cook, but we don't want to overcook the white rice, the solution is soaking. Rinse the rice well, then add the water and salt and let soak in your pot for 30 minutes.
Step 2. Cook the rice on the regular white rice setting of a rice cooker, or according to the white rice instructions on the package. Fluff and enjoy!
FAQ & Expert Tips
