    Why this recipe works

Chipotle lists ALL their ingredients for every single food they sell right on their website.

I took the exact ingredients that they list and developed a home-cook method for their beans.

Chipotle offers both black and pinto beans - and this recipe works the exact same with both. We'll just sauté an onion, add our beans and a few spices, and cook for a few minutes to blend the flavors. So easy!

This homemade Chipotle style beans recipe has the exact flavors of Chipotle, just in a home cooked setting!

Why You'll Love These Homemade Chipotle Style Beans

    • A homemade version of chipotle - all the flavors your love about Chipotle's beans in your own kitchen
    • Smoky & Spicy - with chipotle chiles in adobo sauce
    • Meal Prep Friendly - great for burrito bowls all week
    • Versatile - Use it in bowls, tacos, burritos, and more
    • Two Bean Options - Use black beans, pinto beans, or both depending on your preference

    Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

    • Yellow Onion: a red onion also works
    • Black or Pinto Beans: you can use either bean - or double the recipe and make both! Either way, don't drain the can.
    • Bay Leaf
    • Chipotle Chili in adobo: one chili adds a subtle heat but doesn't make the beans spicy, since we aren't blending it into the sauce. Feel free to discard it at the end. For a hotter version, add more of the adobo sauce and/or another chili.
    • Garlic
    • Lemon & Lime: Chipotle uses both, so I call for both lemon and lime here, but feel free to pick just one.
    • Spices: salt, oregano, cumin

    Step-By-Step Instructions

Step 1. Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté for 3-5 minutes until turning soft and translucent.

Homemade chipotle beans step 1 - sauté the onion

Step 2. Add the beans, including the liquid from the can, bay leaf, chili, garlic, lemon juice, lime juice, salt, oregano, and cumin. Cook on medium heat, stirring occasionally, for 5-10 minutes, or until the bean liquid has thickened.

Ways to Serve Chipotle Style Beans

Use these beans anywhere you'd use meat or other bean recipes:

    • Quesadillas: fold into tortillas with vegan cheese
    • Burrito Bowls: rice, beans, corn, salsa, guacamole
    • Tacos: add lettuce, avocado, cilantro, and lime
    • Burritos: wrap with rice, salsa, and vegan cheese
    • Tostadas: layer over crispy tortillas
    • Salads: add to lettuce with your favorite Mexican-inspired toppings

    FAQ & Expert Tips

    Can I use dried beans?

Yes - cook until tender and reserve ½ cup of the liquid for this recipe.

    Are these beans spicy?

No. They have some smoky chile flavor, but are not spicy. If you want a spicier version, add a few more chipotle chilies.

    Storage

Store in an airtight container for up to a week.

    Recipe Prayer

Thank you God for these beans. Thank you for the nourishing meal we get to eat. And for homemade versions of our favorite foods. Amen.
